Snow in Reykjavík 20. nóvember 2006 11:19 On Sunday 52 rescuers had a busy day because of the heavy snowfall and went on 200 assignments in one day. A lot of snow covered the streets of Reykjavík and most calls were due to cars stuck in the snow. The rescuers also took hospital personnel to and fro work since many had troubles getting to work. The first calls started coming in at five o‘clock in the morning and four hours later the rescuers had been on 120 assignments. Krirstín Hermannsdóttir, meteorologist at The Icelandic Meteorological office said the snow that went over the Faxaflói area begun at two o‘clock on Sunday night in Reykjavík and was over around seven in the morning. Because of the snowfall people who were out in down town Reykjavik had trouble getting home. Very few taxis were driving around. At five o‘clock the Reykjavík police realized that not enough taxis were driving to get all the people home so they got three Reykjavík buses to come pick up the people standing on the taxi line in Lækjargata. About 150 people were taken home in buses. At nine o‘clock on Sunday all the party people had been taken home. On Sunday the police had a busy day and 26 car crashes were reported. Impassability, especially in the suburbs caused a lot of cars to be stuck on the streets.
