People of Airwaves: Loves the Icelandic chocolate cake By Kolbeinn Tumi Daðason 7. nóvember 2014 20:47 Joyce, Theo and Maaike. Vísir/Andri Marínó "We love Iceland," say the couple Joyce and Theo van Kaathoven from the Netherlands whom are among the five thousand foreign guests at this year's Iceland Airwaves music festival which formally kicked off on Wednesday. The married couple were at the Harpa concert hall last night along with their friend Maaike van Oorsouw and were having a great time when we met them. "We love the Icelandic nature, the people and Reykjavík. Just all of it," says Theo and Joyce adds: "And the chocolate cake. It's really good." Hearing this catches the reporter off-guard. Even though he is a big fan of chocolate cakes himself, he didn't realize that the Icelandic one was so popular among tourists, particularly the Dutch. When inquired as to where they get this chocolate cake, they answer that they can get it from any Icelandic bakery. "Chocolate cakes like these are unavailable back home," they say laughing. They also praise the Icelandic carrot cake. The trio have been friends for 9 years, having studied together. The couple are in Iceland for the fourth time and the second time they've come to the Iceland Airwaves festival. Maaike, however, is on her first visit to Iceland. As the conversation continues, the topic soon turns to the fact that Maaike is single. "We're looking for a boyfriend for her. Preferably an Icelandic viking," says Joyce. "They want me to catch an Icelandic boyfriend so that I can come ofter to Iceland," Maaike adds with a smile on her face. When asked if they've found her a suitable man Joyce says that they haven't found anything so far. But the festival has only just begun. "She's also so demanding!" adds Theo and they all roar with laughter. The trio had just come from seeing Agent Fresco which is a favourite band of Theo's. "They were good but the sound at their venue wasn't that good," says Theo who adds that he plans to catch the band again at another venue during the festival.
